The IBM Automation Document Processing (ADP) system is a new solution that combines Artificial Intelligence (AI) with low-code tooling to help customers eliminate manual document processing.
It does so by learning how to classify documents more accurately, so it extracts better information, said Daniel Ouimet, IBM Global Technical Program Lead, in a recent webinar about ADP.
“The system works so well because humans are training it every time they add new documents,” Ouimet said. “In the past, we had to use templates or fingerprints to process documents because you had to pre-train the system on every variation of a form it might see. With ADP, this is happening automatically, and the system gets smarter with each use, so it should grow in proficiency over time.”
IBM developed ADP as a response to these time-wasting solutions, by looking at ways that processing documents could be made easier with AI. This solution looks at a document the same way a human would—by first figuring out what kind of form is being inputted. ADP then uses AI’s knowledge set to quickly pull important information from the document—like invoice or purchase order numbers—and extracting that pertinent information in one new usable format.
You can train the ADP system for less recognizable fields, too, because forms can be so different from one to the next. Without ADP, businesses would have to build a template form for every single vendor for systems.
A good example is this is a long form date, like May 25, 2021, whereas the backend might be looking for 5/25/21. The system can be trained to recognize all dates and automatically convert them. Further, you can quickly go through errors the system recognizes without having to manually pull out “missing” or “unrecognizable” data. And remember, every document that is inputted is training your system, so your system is getting smarter over time.
“We started looking at ways to make the process of document processing a lot easier,” Ouimet said. “The premise is to use AI to recognize the form and use its intelligence to locate the data automatically without any training or, more importantly, human oversight.” Ouimet also reported that there are fewer error codes using ADP than with manual data entry.
