During an interview, there are several common mistakes that can be easily avoided with proper planning and prep. From our ID Talent Acquisition team, here are simple solutions to combat common interview mistakes:

Mistake #1: Lack of preparation

Not researching the company or practicing your responses to common interview questions can make you appear unprepared and disinterested in the position.

Solution: Successful interviews stem from preparation. The best thing you can do is familiarize yourself with the company that has invited you to an interview. Take the extra step to dive deeper into researching the company by common avenues such as their website or other forms of online presence (LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, etc.). Along with doing your research about the company, increase your readiness by practicing the answers to common interview questions out loud. Whether you practice with a family member, friend, or even in the mirror, the more you practice answering those questions aloud, the more confident you will be entering your interview. These are just a few great ways to get a better understanding of the company and gain confidence in your interviewing skills prior to your interview.

Mistake #2: Improper timing

Arriving late to the interview can create a negative impression and show a lack of respect for the interviewer’s time.

Solution: For an in-person interview, make sure to arrive at least 10-15 minutes early to give yourself time to get settled and mentally prepared for the interview. If your interview is virtual, you can arrive 5-7 minutes early to the interview room to ensure all your technology is good to go!

Mistake #3: Dressing inappropriately

Dressing in casual clothing for the interview is often seen as inappropriate and unprofessional. It can create a negative impression and display disrespect towards your interviewers.

Solution: Make sure to research the company’s dress code and dress appropriately for the interview. Maybe even go one step above the company dress code to show your respect for the business.

Mistake #4: Being negative or critical

Speaking negatively about your previous job, employer, or experience to the interviewer can create a poor impression. It can also show a lack of enthusiasm for your overall candidacy for the role or opportunity.

Solution: Be sure to keep your answers positive. If they ask a question that can create a negative thought or conversation, make sure to focus on the personal and professional growth you had from that negative situation. Define the professional strides you have taken versus the negativity you may have experienced in that previous job.

Mistake #5: Not asking questions

Neglecting to ask any questions during the interview can present a lack of preparation and can make you appear uninterested in the position or the company.

Solution: Have at least 3 “outside the box” questions prepared to ask your interviewer when they open the floor for questions. This gives you the chance to gain as much knowledge as you can about the company you are interviewing with and the opportunity. As you are interviewing, actively listen for any points that can be brought back into the conversation as a question. Examples of these questions include responsibilities within the role, company culture, etc. For both “outside the box” and questions to listen for, read our article here.
