Asking the right questions during an interview can help you learn more about the company and the position as well as demonstrate your interest and enthusiasm for the opportunity.

Here are nine of the best questions to ask during your interview: 

  1. “Can you tell me more about the day-to-day responsibilities of this position?” Asking about the daily responsibilities of the position can help you understand the scope of the role and what would be expected of you.
  2. “How would you describe the team I would be working with?” Asking about the team you would be working with can give you a sense of the team dynamic and the kind of support and resources you might have.  
  3. “What are 3 qualities that someone who is successful in this role have?” Are these qualities your strengths? Your weaknesses? Would it be easy or difficult for you to be the person they are looking for?  
  4. “Can you describe to me the culture of the organization?” Learn what type of culture fits your work style, personality, and values, and make sure your potential employer fits your needs.  
  5. “During the first 6 months of the role, what are 3 things you would expect the successful candidate to achieve/accomplish?” Not only does this fill you in on the priorities of the role, but it also requires the interviewer to picture you in the role. 
  6. “What do you enjoy most about working for this company?” This question will help you learn more about the company culture and the things that make it a great place to work. It can also give you insight into the values and priorities of the organization. 
  7. “What are the biggest challenges and opportunities facing the company or team right now?” This question will help you understand the current state of the company and what it is focusing on. It can also give you a sense of the kinds of projects and initiatives you might be working on if you are hired. 
  8. “What do you see as the biggest opportunities for growth and development within the company?” Asking about growth and development opportunities can show your interest in building a long-term career with the company and can give you a sense of the kinds of opportunities that are available. 
  9. “How do you envision the company supporting employee growth and development?” Inquiring about opportunities for advancement and professional development within the organization demonstrates your ambition to grow with the company and helps you understand the potential paths for career progression. 

Along with asking these questions, here are some quick key reminders when entering an interview:

  1. Be Yourself!!
  2. Ask questions if you are unsure of anything being discussed.
  3. Taking a moment of silence to think about your answer to a question is okay! While uncomfortable, silence will show you are responding thoughtfully to the question asked of you.
